"Raajneeti main koi faisla sahi ya galat nahi hota, woh to bus maksat poora karne ke liye hota hai"
This dialogue of nana patekar gives the gist of the movie. A brilliant movie from the maker of gangaajal, it takes you through the world of corruption, greed for power, and lack of moral values associated with politics. It is like the mahabharat in today's world....having the duryodhan, kunti, karna, dhritarshtra and the likes....but nobody is fair and honest, everyone is selfish and brutal to achieve their ends. Naseeruddeen Shah, a man with a good heart, who wants to really help the masses, remove poverty, hunger and all such things negative an society finds a follower in bharati(daughter of the chief minister)...she worships him , gives herself to him leading to the birth of an illegitimate child, who later grows up to be ajay devgan (read: kunti and karan).A guilty naseeruddin shah leaves everything and goes away and baby ajay devgn is packed off in a basket in the river by nana patekar to meet his fate. Bharati then marries chandra pratap, younger brother of bhanu pratap (pandu and dhritarashtra respectively). Bharati now has two sons, samar (ranbir) and prithvi (arjun rampal), while the party leader's son is manoj bajpai (duryodhana). The government falls, Bhanu pratap suffers a paralytic stroke, and hands over power to prithvi rather than his own son...an angry manoj bajpai brings over dalit leader sooraj(ajay devgan...karna remember?) to his side.
Thus begins a race for power, which brings out the worst in everybody; deceit, treachery, murders become something very normal.
Breathtaking performances by nana patekar as usual, arjun rampal,as the short tempered guy who WANTS TO BE THE FACE OF THE PARTY AT ANY COST, and ranbir kapoor (growing better with each movie),as the initially sober and calm guy but later the cold blooded and scheming man who is behind the death of many people, Katrina kaif is just okay, in fact not good at all .The promo will make u think she has a strong character with a big role, but that is not the truth, she has quite a small role and also spoils the masterstroke dialogue given to her when she faces the masses with her anglicised hindi and has also lost the freshness she had in her previous movies.
A brutal and hard hitting movie like the other prakash jha movies, it left me slightly sad at the end of it, if this is how politics really is...
